Walk east to the river and the Capilano-Pacific Trail—the river’s major route, which also connects with the Park Royal Shopping Centre and Ambleside Park. The upper section of the Capilano-Pacific Trail begins north of the Upper Levels Highway (Highway 1/99). To find it, follow Keith Road east off Taylor Way and park on either side of the underpass beneath the Upper Levels Highway. To reach Capilano River Regional Park by bus from downtown Vancouver, catch a West Vancouver Transit bus to Park Royal Shopping Centre and begin exploring on the Capilano-Pacific Trail nearby.

Just above the third switchback are two rough entrances to trails on the lower slopes of Hollyburn Mountain. The well-marked turnoff to the Hollyburn cross-country and toboggan centre and its parking lot is located farther uphill. The Cypress Bowl downhill area is just a short drive past the Hollyburn turnoff. Since 1985, commercial operations in the park have been run by a private company, Cypress Bowl Recreation Limited, which leases a fifth of the park’s total area, including the alpine runs on Black Mountain and Mount Strachan, plus the Nordic and toboggan trails on Hollyburn.

For $10, ride the Skyride down to the parking lot at the foot of the gondola. Hardier souls could hike down the Grouse Grind. If you haven’t arranged to be picked up here, you can catch the #236 bus back to Vancouver. Note: Dogs are not permitted on the Grouse Mountain Skyride. > VARLEY TRAIL As the palette of colours in local forests shifts with the seasons, bright pockets almost always persist. Such highlights lend an added poignancy for day trippers who walk the Varley Trail, which links Lynn Headwaters Regional Park with the Lower Seymour Conservation Reserve (see LSCR map,).
