Interpersonal and relational analysts, this criticism goes, tend to discuss with their patients what is most easily available; and so treatment tends to be constituted by superficial, rational discussion. Thoroughgoing change, which requires the acceptance and encouragement of less comfortable, rational, and accessible material, is thereby sacrificed. And so one of my intentions in these introductory remarks is to reply to all such views, not just that of Peltz and Goldberg. I focus on their piece not because its content is unique, but because it is a convenient, thoughtful, and lucid expression of a critical view of interpersonal/relational psychoanalysis that is commonly held by analysts of other schools.

This critical view is sometimes explicitly stated, more often only implied. Peltz and Goldberg’s criticism is among the implicit versions; they do not suggest in so many words that an interest in clinical interaction leads to superficiality. But others do suggest just that. More often than not, such claims are made in private conversations, usually conversations with those who feel the same way. But such views do sometimes find their way into print. Let me quote two recent examples to illustrate what I mean.

The clinical report—was significantly shaped by the clinician’s understanding of the formative unconscious phantasy in his patient’s mind. At the same time, the analyst’s subjectivity was completely missing from his clinical account, revealing the absence of a conception of the field. , as if it were “endogenous,” without regard to its place in the analytic interaction—was feasible at least partly because of this absence. Chapter 8, “Implicit theories of technique and the values that inspire them,” suggests that many of our theories of technique come about spontaneously (emergently), growing from value commitments that we may or may not have thought through.
