It was difficult to do business with them and they had shown little sign of interest in any case. The morality based nature of dissent in Czechoslovakia also made the opposition less willing to compromise. The Velvet Revolution began with a student demonstration on 17 November 1989. It was ostensibly called in honour of a student victim of Nazism but it quickly developed into a political rally against the regime. No one died in the violent assault on the rally by riot police on Narodni Tfida, but rumours of a death heightened tensions The Communists Take Power 37 and the beatings administered on the orders of the Prague Communist Party caused an explosion of mass fury.

My thoughts ran back twenty-one years to that May Day parade of 1968: I could compare this moment with nothing else. And that for me at least, closed the circle of historic events that had started in October 1967, when I launched the revolt against Novotny. So many things had happened - times of hope, times of defeat, times of patient resistance. Now I was standing on this balcony, at the side of a Czech dissident almost a generation younger than I, and we both knew that the crowd down there was giving us the power to bring the cause of freedom to its final victory in our country.

The key point here is that 'The Power of the Powerless', arguably Havel's most important political critique of communism and the place of the dissident within it, is, at its deepest level, not really an essay about communists or dissidents at all. It is a critique of the human condition in the modern world. In communism, Havel sees the dangers of the contemporary world through a disturbingly powerful magnifying glass. But he does not identify something which is unique or absolutely exclusive to it.
